November 2023

END OF SEASON UPDATES

What an Incredible Season

Many, MANY thanks to all the hard-working
Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers for your day-in, day-out commitment to sustainable recreation, healthy landscapes, fire mitigation, and youth stewardship education.

This season, 1,457 volunteers worked on 79 project sites for a combined total of 12,501 hours including staff time dedicated to stewardship. This is the equivalent of one person working full-time for six years! The best part? We did that all together in just 6 months!  The RFOV 2023 Impact Report with all metrics and restoration outcomes will be available soon on the RFOV website.

OCTOBER HIGHLIGHTS

Last Projects of the Season and a Solar Eclipse

Last month, we successfully wrapped up the 2023 Project Season during an action-packed weekend at two amazing locations: Silt River Preserve and Wulfsohn Mountain Park.

At Silt River Preserve, our dedicated volunteers left a lasting impact by planting an impressive total of 368 trees and riparian plants. Meanwhile, over at Wulfsohn Mountain Park, our volunteers not only learned about the critical importance of fire mitigation but also put their newfound knowledge into action by clearing away dead trees and brush. Our final project was a success thanks to our dedicated chainsaw volunteers.

Our time at Silt River Preserve also provided us with a remarkable sight. With protective glasses, volunteers witnessed an annular solar eclipse and saw "the ring of fire" as it went across the sky.

Youth In Nature News

Last month, current Youth In Nature student, Elsa Tullar, and Youth In Nature alum, Caleb Seward, were honored in the Aspen Times for their Volunteer efforts. They were both given The Rising Star Award. Read more here!

In October, YIN students met at the Maroon Bells to learn about the unique geology of the maroon formation with the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (ACES).

In November, students will participate in a stewardship project at The Colorado National Monument. After completing some trail work, the students will go canyoneering through the monument's canyons.
