2010 Project Season Preview!
Here's a look at what we'll be doing in 2010. There's something for everyone: Saturday or Thursday evening projects from Aspen to Hanging Lake to New Castle. Come join us and do some great work on our valley trails! Click here to volunteer.

Saturday & Sunday, May 1& 2

Crew Leader Training, Glenwood Springs

Saturday, May 8

Scout & Forest Hollow Trails, Glenwood

We’ll perform trail maintenance over the entire length of these two favorite trails in Glenwood Springs.  Our highest priorities are fixing erosion problems, re-establishing trail width and trimming back encroaching vegetation.

Saturday, June 5: National Trails Day

  • New Elk Creek Trail, New Castle
  • Ditch Trail, Snowmass Village

Every Thursday evening in June, 5:30 until dusk

New Upper Loop Wulfsohn Trail, Glenwood

Help build a brand new single-track trail on the Wulfsohn Open Space.  This new uphill loop of the main Wulfsohn Trail will traverse some fairly rough terrain.

Saturday & Sunday, June 26-27

Crew Leader Training, Carbondale

Saturday, July 10

Basalt Mountain Trail, Basalt

We’ll focus on a particularly bad 1.5-mile section of the Basalt Mountain Trail that’s very rutted and overgrown. Volunteers will work to stabilize and improve the trail drainage as well as trimming back the trees and shrubs to open up the trail corridor.

Saturday, July 24

Smuggler Mountain Trails – Phase II

We will continue to build new trail segments on the Smuggler Open Space, including an access trail that beginning near the Smuggler Platform and an extension of the Tootsie Roll Trail to connect into the system and eliminate a nasty climb on Smuggler Road.

Every Thursday evening in July, 5:30 to dusk

Ajax Mountain Trail, Aspen

The Ajax Mountain Trail runs for 1.5 miles along the base of Aspen Mountain with trailheads at Koch Park in the west and on Ute Avenue in the east.  Volunteers will trim back encroaching vegetation, repair the trail surface, and improve drainage on this popular trail.

Saturday, August 7

American Lake Trail, Aspen

We’ll improve the drainage on one of the most popular Forest Service Trails in the Aspen area , and define backcountry campsites near this beautiful alpine lake situated in the Maroon Bells Snowmass Wilderness Area.

Saturday, August 28

Smuggler Restoration & Trails – Phase II

We’ll continue the restoration and trail work begun last year, turning sections of double-track roads into single-track through revegetation.  We’ll also be seeding and planting trees and shrubs to restore areas impacted by the old mining activities on this site.

Saturday, September 11

Raspberry Creek Loop Trail, Marble

This 9-mile trail is a moderate to difficult hike that is surprisingly popular considering its remote location.  Hikers and equestrians are rewarded with stunning views as they climb 3,100' through the Raggeds Wilderness to Anthracite Pass and back down into Marble. Volunteers will build dip/waterbar structures, checkdams, and short reroutes on the east leg. The second priority is the overgrown and eroding Raspberry Creek side.

Saturday, September 18 & 19

Hanging Lake Trail, Glenwood Springs

One of the most heavily visited trails in the entire state of Colorado, with about 80,000 visitors per year due to its close proximity to I-70, short distance (1.2 miles) and spectacular travertine lake scenery.  Nearly all of the trail work involves using native rock to rebuild rock walls and install rock steps and drainage structures.

Saturday, October 2

Tamarisk Removal – Phase II, Glenwood Springs

Help continue our efforts to eradicate the invasive tamarisk and Russian-olive along the Colorado River. between West Glenwood and the hot springs by finishing the middle section of the north bank and hopefully completing the south bank. We’ll also do some restoration planting with native vegetation in Two Rivers Park to replace some of the ground cover and vegetation we removed in 2009.
