  Scout & Forest Hollow Trails

Glenwood Springs • Saturday, May 8

RFOV and our project partners will once again be performing trail maintenance over the entire length of the Scout and Forest Hollow Trail in
Glenwood Springs.  We will focus on the highest priorities including erosion problems, re-establishing trail width and trimming back encroaching
    vegetation.

PARTNERS:  BLM, Forest Service, Roaring Fork Mountain Bike Association

-JUNE-

Upper Loop Wulfsohn Trail - Thursday Evenings in June
   Glenwood Springs • June 3, 10, 17, 24
Help build a brand new trail on Glenwood Spring’s Wulfsohn Open Space any Thursday evening in June.  This new single track trail will form a new
loop uphill of the main Wulfsohn Trail and traverse some fairly rough terrain.

PARTNERS:   City of Glenwood Springs Parks Department, Alpine Bank

New Elk Creek Trail - National Trails Day
    New Castle
• Saturday, June 5
We will construct a new trail along lower Elk Creek that will link the existing path north of the foot bridge to the Main Street area in downtown New
    Castle.
    PARTNERS: Town of New Castle

Highline Trail - National Trails Day
Snowmass Village • Saturday, June 5

The second National Trails Day project consists of maintenance work on the popular Highline Trail, one of the key trails in Snowmass Village’s great
     single-track system.

PARTNERS: Town of Snowmass Village, Aspen Cycling Club

-JULY-

Ajax Mountain Trail - Thursday Evenings in July
   Aspen • July 8, 15, 22, 29
The Ajax Mountain Trail runs for 1.5 miles along the base of Aspen Mountain with trailheads at Koch Park in the west and on Ute Avenue in the east.
Volunteers will work to trim back encroaching vegetation, repair the trail surface and improve drainage on this popular trail.
PARTNERS: City of Aspen Parks Department

  Basalt Mountain Trail
     Basalt • Saturday, July 10
One particularly bad 1.5 mile section of the Basalt Mountain Trail will be the focus of this RFOV project.  The trail is
     very rutted and overgrown and
volunteers will work to stabilize and improve the trail drainage as well as trimming back the trees and shrubs to open
     up the trail corridor.
PARTNERS: Forest Service, Roaring Fork Mountain Bike Association

  Pyramid Peak Trail Overnight Project
Aspen • Friday-Sunday, July 16-18   Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers is partnering with the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative for an Adopt-A-Trail
project to repair the Pyramid Peak Trail. For this three-night, two-day project in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness Area near Aspen, volunteers
will hike in Friday, July 16, and work for two days (Saturday and Sunday) before hiking out the afternoon of Sunday, July 18.

     PARTNERS: Colorado Fourteeners Initiative

  Smuggler Mountain Trails

Aspen • Saturday, July 24

This year’s project will continue to build new trail segments on the Smuggler Open Space.  One trail is a new Smuggler Access Trail that will be
the main gateway into the area.  This trail will begin near the Smuggler Platform and replace the existing road with single-track.  The second trail
we’ll work on will extend the Tootsie Roll Trail down the mountain to connect into the system and eliminate a nasty climb on Smuggler Road.
PARTNERS:  Pitkin County Open Space & Trails, City of Aspen Parks, Aspen Cycling Club, Roaring Fork Mountain Bike Association

-AUGUST-

  American Lake Trail

Aspen • Saturday, August 7

The American Lake Trail is one of the most popular Forest Service Trails in the Aspen area for several reasons including its proximity to town and that
in a relatively short distance (3.20 miles one way) to hike in to experience a beautiful alpine lake situated in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness
Area.  RFOV’s work will include improving drainage on the trail to prevent erosion and to improve and define the backcountry campsites near the lake.
    PARTNERS:  Forest Service,
National Forest Foundation Ski Conservation Fund, Harry & Karen Andrews, Arthur & Toni Rembe Rock, Rockwood Charitable Trust

 Smuggler Mountain Restoration & Trails

Aspen • Saturday, August 28

RFOV’s second 2010 project on Smuggler Mountain will continue the restoration and trail work we started in last year.  Once again we’ll work to turn
sections of old double track roads into single track trails by revegetating one track and improving the track we want to keep.  We’ll also be seeding
and planting trees and shrubs to restore areas impacted by the old mining activities on this site.
PARTNERS:  Pitkin County Open Space & Trails, City of Aspen Parks, Alpine Bank

-SEPTEMBER-

  Raspberry Creek Loop Trail
   Marble
• Saturday, September 11
This 9 mile long trail is a moderate to difficult one day hike that is surprisingly popular considering its remote location.  Hikers and equestrians are
rewarded with stunning views as they climb 3,100' up through the Raggeds Wilderness Area to Anthracite Pass and back down into Marble.  The top
priority is to tackle some long-deferred trail reconstruction work on the east leg of the loop.   This trail section has become entrenched and volunteers
will build dip/waterbar structures, checkdams and short reroutes.  The second priority is the Raspberry Creek side which is severely overgrown and
    eroding in several sections.

    PARTNERS:  Forest Service

  Hanging Lake Trail
   Glenwood Springs
• September 18-19

This trail is one of the most heavily visited trails in the entire state of Colorado receiving approximately 80,000 visitors per year due to its close
proximity to I-70, short distance (1.2 miles) and spectacular travertine lake scenery.  Nearly all of the trail work involves using native rock to rebuild
rock walls, install rock steps and drainage structures.

PARTNERS: Forest Service, Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado
, National Forest Foundation Ski Conservation Fund, Hot Springs Lodge & Pool, Valley View Hospital Foundation

-OCTOBER-

Colorado River Tamarisk Removal & Restoration
   Glenwood Springs
Saturday, October 2
Help continue our efforts to eradicate the invasive Tamarisk and Russian-olive along the Colorado River. We’ll continue the work we began in 2009 in
Glenwood Springs between West Glenwood and the hot springs by finishing the middle section of north bank and hopefully completing the south bank.
We’ll also do some restoration planting with native vegetation in Two Rivers Park to replace some of the ground cover and vegetation we removed in
    2009.
PARTNERS:  City of Glenwood Springs, Garfield County, Trout Unlimited, LoVa Trails
